Lishan Visitor Center
The Lishan Visitor Center was formerly the “Qingxin Pavilion” of the Lishan Guest House, which was a restaurant and souvenir shop. After the Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area was established in 2001, it was renovated as the Lishan Visitor Center. The classic Chinese style red bricks on the exterior complement the adjacent Lishan Guest House.
Lishan Visitor Center provides information on the attractions in the Lishan Scenic Area, which helps visitors to understand the natural sceneries and cultural characteristics of the Lishan area. The staff reflects the hospitality of the indigenous people, warmly greeting visitors from far and wide. The visitor center is the best first stop to get to know Lishan. For those who love to take pictures, do not miss the free Atayal traditional clothing experience and the “future postal service” postcard delivery service.
Lishan Culture Museum
The Lishan Culture Museum was opened in 1971. The exhibition on the first floor includes the construction history of Central Cross-Island Highway and Atayal traditional cultures such as facial tattoo, marriage and naming traditions. The Central Cross-Island Highway development history records the heroic stories of highway workers and the difficult history of the highway construction. The Central Cross-Island Highway has had a tremendous impact on road development, mountain farming, tourism and other aspects of society; it is an important page in Taiwan’s history.
The second floor displays Atayal artifacts; besides tours of actual Atayal homes and barns, the exhibition also gives detailed introduction to Atayal weaving, hunting, household utensils and traditional foods. It also provides a virtual reality hunting game, which is a favorite of visitors. The Lishan Culture Museum is the best place to develop a deeper understanding of Atayal culture; it is a must-see attraction.
1956 Maple Valley
The 1956 Maple Valley is 50 meters from the Lishan Guest House. It was thus named because its elevation is 1956 meters above sea level and the Central Cross-Island Highway was also completed in 1956.
The 1956 Maple Valley is a scenic area featuring impressive maple trees. Walking along the wooden path, visitors can see over 10 species of maples planted throughout the park area. Besides native species such as Taiwan Buerger Maple, Green Maple, Chinese Sweet Gum, Taiwan Red Maple and Hairy Japanese Maple, there are also introduced species such as Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Japanese Maple, Purple-leaf Japanese Maple and Amur Maple. Against the backdrop of the gorgeous mountains across the Dajia River, these maples are even more breathtaking.
At the lowest level of the garden are 5 blessing bells representing family, health, wealth, love and career. With a gentle tap, the crisp sound of the bell echoes through the valley, which will grant you your every wish.
Lokah Warrior Camp and Range Landscape Pavilion
The Lokah Warrior Camp was formerly the base for the Lishan Guest House’s European villa, which was closed due to landslides. After the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau completed a restoration project, the land was re-planned and reconstructed by the Tri-mountain National Scenic Area Headquarters in 2014. It is currently the site for local tribal residents to hold traditional ceremonies. The inner walls of the area are painted with Atayal legends, displaying the traditional charm of indigenous people.
The “Range Landscape Pavilion” is situated on the highest ground overlooking the intersection of Provincial Highway 7A and Provincial Highway 8. Because of its higher elevation, it is the perfect spot to photograph clouds and the flaming sunset. Visitors can admire the mountains, sunrise, moving clouds, Jiayang Alluvial Fan, Techi Reservoir, and more. Visitors can take in the panoramic views of beautiful Lishan from here.
Quiet Trail-Siliq Trail
The Quiet Trail-Siliq Trail is approximately 600 meters long and takes about 40 minutes to walk one way. The entire trail is built using eco-friendly methods. Because it passes through the natural habitat of grey-cheeked fulvetta in the Lishan area, the Atayal named the trail “Siliq” which means grey-cheeked fulvetta in Atayal.
The Quiet Trail-Siliq Trail connects the Lishan Guest House Finding Plum Garden with the Warrior Camp. On the way, the trail passes through a red cypress grove and then a natural hardwood forest. Visitors can enjoy the rich forest ecosystem while under the comfortable shade and listen to the delightful bird songs. It is suitable for families to travel and offers a great way to get closer to nature.
During the hike, visitors can see several rip raps made from stones. The facade of the rip raps is covered entirely with moss and according to local Atayal elders, these rip raps are relics left by the early settlers. They embody the migration and development history of the Atayal.
Mqoyat-Sakura Affinity Hill
The Mqoyat-Sakura Affinity Hill is an excellent scenic parking area for observing the natural wonders of Lishan. In early spring, the park is filled with cherry blossoms; the sea of red blossom is a major draw. The wall and installation art pieces in the park create a romantic and joyful atmosphere, making the park a perfect spot for dating and taking wedding photos.
Lishan Guesthouse Ecology Trail
The Lishan Guesthouse Ecology Trail is approximately 950 meters long and takes around 90 minutes to walk one way. The Tri-mountain National Scenic Area Headquarters took the roof tiles removed from the renovated Lishan Guest House, crumbled them and used them to pave the trail, which has the educational meaning of promoting environmental protection and recycling.
Lishan Guesthouse Ecology Trail starts from behind the Lishan Guest House and ends at the Cherry Blossoms Garden Park of Fushoushan Farm. The idesia trees along the trail will bear vibrant, red berries in autumn and winter, attracting flocks of birds to come and feed. Thus, you will have the chance to see birds such as vivid niltava, fire-breasted flowerpecker, Taiwan yuhina and plumbeous water redstart from the trail. This trail is the perfect spot for bird watching in the Lishan area.
As the Lishan Guesthouse Ecology Trail is quite steep, for personal safety reasons, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with heart conditions or high blood pressure should exercise their prudence when walking the trail and should not walk alone.
Lishan Observation Deck
The Lishan Observation Deck is built on the site of a former bus station of Taiwan Motor Transport, which was the transportation hub of the Lishan area; it always attracts a lot of tourists.
The scenic lookout overlooks the Dajia River Alluvial Fan and the beautiful Xueshan Range, including Xiaojianshan, Jiayangshan, Dajianshan, Xueshan, Zhijiayangshan, Taoshan, and others. Each of which are towering peaks over 3,000 meters in elevation.
