The address of the Tobacco Factory is No. 133 Guangfu South Road which was the factory’s main gate. From here, the first building we see is the office building, the construction materials are much more exquisite than those used in the factory. There is a small roundabout at the entrance which was designed to slow down the traffic. On the floor plan, the office building looks like a door shape(ㄇ). Besides, another special feature of it is that it used to be the only three-story building in the factory. There used to be a guard room on the first floor. The second floor was the office, including the office of the factory manager. This office has an open counter made of marble and wooden floor. The wooden floor would make noises when people walk on it protecting against thief. A meeting room was on the third floor. In order to differentiate from other buildings in the factory, the roof tiles are made of the green tiles which imported from Japan.

We see the place that every employee must pass though through before they got off work. It was originally a guard room in the factory, it became the inspection room after the WWII. In order to prevent employees from hiding cigarettes and smuggling them out of the factory, the iron railing at the door was designed to allow men and women queuing up for inspection separately. Most people smuggled out cigarettes to sell for money, not to smoke.

You might be curious about how people smuggled cigarettes, actually, there are were plenty of methods: some people tied cigarettes on their legs and covered by them with trousers; some carried their children and hid them on their backs, and some people hid forty to fifty cigarettes under the bicycle seats. In some cases, people even hid cigarettes in the inner tubes of bicycles. Those employees really came up with all kinds of methods to smuggle cigarettes.

Now, we are at Warehouse 1-5, where people often come to visit the exhibitions. Though there are only five warehouses left, there were up to 15 before 1998. These warehouses were used for storage, but were bombed in 1944. It is said that an American pilot was supposed to bomb the train depot nearby, but accidentally bombed the warehouses instead. The Taipei Cultural and Creative Building is located just where Warehouse 6-11 were. You can take a look at these warehouses. They were made of concrete and have wooden roofs.
The wooden pillars between the warehouses have pipes to catch the rain and drain it out. You may notice that the warehouses are a little far from the ground. Because the warehouses were used to store tobacco, it was important to control the temperature and humidity. This is also the reason for the use of revolving windows and louvers on the wall.
There is something special about Warehouse 2. That is, in order to make the transportation faster, there is a conveyor belt connecting to the second floor of the factory. It is spiral and can protect the products by slowing down the descending speed. In this way, the cigarettes could be transported directly to the warehouse through the conveyor belt.
Warehouse 1, 2, and 3 were used to store the products, and some people would come directly and pick them up. People usually parked their trucks in front of Warehouse 1 and loaded the boxes of cigarettes onto the trucks. At the back of the warehouses, there was a section of railroad platform. The goods could be transported on the train all over Taiwan. Wasn’t it very convenient?

There were many advanced designs in the factory, and the bathhouse was one of them. Why were there bathhouses in the factory? It was because the workers in the leaf processing department often got the smell of tobacco. Therefore, the bathhouses were designed for the staff to take a shower before going home.
There were two bathhouses for men and women, with changing rooms. In the center of the bathhouse is a pool for hot water which was heated in the boiler room and delivered through the pipes. In the past, not everyone had a water heater at home. Therefore, many people would take a bath before going home. The women’s bathhouse has turned into a bathroom style library, called “Not Just Library”. With a ticket, you can read in the library for a whole day. As for the men’s bathhouse, it has become an art space. You can go visit it if you have time!

The open space in this building is the Baroque Garden, the place you must see when visiting the Songyen. Actually, here used to be the lawn for employees to play baseball or take a walk in the Japanese period. Not until 1958 ,the then factory manager entrusted the designer to build it. The garden adopts geometric design and follows a symmetrical pattern. A three-layer fountain is located at the center. Also, it has triangular pools with a fire safety function which can be used to put out fire.

In the past, landscape design did not gain much attention. After the Baroque Garden was completed, many people were drawn to it and the garden became teaching materials for the Department of Horticulture in the universities. Everyone was surprised that there was such a beautiful garden hidden in the factory! Also, many people take wedding photos in the garden, even singer Jolin Tsai has filmed the music video here.

I am going to introduce a thoughtful place, the nursery room. It was built in the post-WWII period and followed Japanese-style wooden design. The nursery room was originally located in the south of the Tobacco Factory, later, due to the construction of Taipei Dome, it moved to where we see now. How many children do you think there were at that time? As a matter of fact, there were at most one to two hundred children. After the 65th days of giving birth, female employees could bring their children here to nannies until they turned two years old. In the heyday, a babysitter would take care of six children in average. Of course, female workers also needed to take care of their children on their own. Every two hours they could take a 15 minutes break, they would go breastfeed their babies, or give the older children meals in the nursery room. We call those kids who grew up in the nursery room “Babies of Songshan Tobacco Factory.” In 2013, the nursery also turned into a book store for shooting in a drama called Lovestore at the Corner.

Across from the boiler room is the machine repair shop. Machines that did not work would be repaired here. Furthermore, the wooden windows and furniture would also get repaired in the shop. When there was a machine that was not working, the staff would report it first. A repairman would check the machine and try to replace the parts of it.
Why did we need a machine repair shop? It is because the machines were very important for making cigarettes. The production of cigarettes in 1946 was about 1.18 billion cigarettes, and it rose to 3.87 billion in 1950 because of the advanced machines. The earliest cigarette rolling machines could roll 360 cigarettes in a minute. After computerization, they became even faster. The machines from England could roll 8,000 cigarettes in a minute, which was amazing! However, when the factory stopped producing cigarettes, the machines were shipped away.

Let me show you the heart of the tobacco factory, the “boiler room.” It played a very important role by providing heat for the whole factory.
Inside the boiler room are two rectangular spaces with three huge boilers. The steam was sent to the factory through the pipes to steam the tobacco leaves. This is to prevent the worm eggs and soften the dry leaves. After that, the workers could sort and cut the leaves. And the boiler room was also helpful to the bathhouse in the factory. The hot water was heated in the boiler room and then sent to the bathhouse, so that everyone can enjoy a comfortable hot bath. Besides, the steam was also provided for the kitchen. The boiler room was really useful in many ways.
Let’s look up at the chimney of the boiler room. It used to be an important landmark in this area. Have you noticed? You can see the chimney and Taipei one o one at the same time. Isn’t it interesting?

The east side of the factory has a charming eco-pond, lots of people like to take a walk or exercise here. There used to have three lotus ponds but now there only one left in the Park.

The purpose of building a pond then was for fire safety. Since the storages in the factory such as cigarettes and raw materials are all flammable, in the event of a fire, there would be water for putting out fires. During the period of the Monopoly Bureau, lotus was planted in the pond, and many fish were raised. Employees were also allowed to fish in the pond. Later, a pavilion was built at the center of the pond, creating a special scenic spot. Many employees would take photos in front of the pavilion.

Next, let’s walk around the eco-pond, there are birds such as egrets, red-crowned swamp chickens, night herons and so on. We also can see lots of endemic species in Taiwan, for instance: the water willow on the north side. The ecology here is very rich and diverse.

Next, I’d like to take you to a secret spot, “Song Yan Court”, the small open space between the buildings and the factory. Why is it called “Song Yan Court”? It is because the open space is square, just like the character “口”. There is the Taiwan Design Museum, the Design Spot, and the exhibitions near Song Yan Court. By the way, you can find many award-winning products in the Design Spot on the first floor of the office building.
Have you noticed the cute orange statue? That is “Master D” designed by AKIBO Lee Ming-Dao for the Taiwan Design Museum. It has three heads and six hands, which means that every designer is a design master!
