With a total length of 4.03 kilometers, the Maokong Gondola is the first gondola system in Taipei City. One-way travel time on the gondola is about 30 minutes. The gondola ride includes four stops, namely the Taipei Zoo Station, Taipei Zoo South Station, Zhinan Temple Station, and the Maokong Station. 


The three most beautiful times to take the gondola are in the midst after rain, when the sun is setting, and when the lights of the city are shining at night. As the gondola passes over the undulating terrain, you can glimpse moving Metro trains, the park along the Jingmei River, and the "giraffe" incinerator. When you reach the second stop, the gondola takes a big turn, and you will get a panoramic view of the landscape, including vehicles moving along the freeway below. After passing the Zhinan Temple Station, you will enter a steep V-shaped gully; this is the climax of the gondola ride, and is an unforgettable experience.


The final stop is at Maokong, where numerous tea plantations and tea shops are located. Many visitors specially make the trip here to have tea and chat. Make sure to visit a tea shop and order the famous “Tieguanyin” when you visit Maokong. The trip will be worth your while when you taste the delicious specialty tea and meal combo, and view the stunning scenery of Taipei Basin.

【English】Chen Cheng-po outdoor Art Museum

Chen Cheng-Po Outdoor Art Museum is exhibiting twelve pictures of Tamsui scenery by the first fine-art painter Chen Cheng-Po (1895-1947). The exhibition introduces viewers to historical aspects of the paintings, leading them into the Tamsui of former years. During the mid-1930s, Chen visited Tamsui frequently. He portrayed various natural and cultural products from the local area with paint, fountain pen, or pencil, on canvas or sketchbook. It is rare in Taiwan, even in the whole of Asia, for a painter to create such a great number of scenic works depicting a single location, so these paintings are special. Chen’s works are not only of value in terms of art history, they are also evidence of Tamsui’s history. Many scenes and buildings depicted in Chen’s works are still well-preserved. Guests may visit famous spots like Jinkang Street, Tamsui Red Castle, Chapel of Presbyterian Church, Tamkang Senior High School, and Customs Wharf, which have been depicted in Chen’s paintings. One may experience the history of the town of Tamsui through these incredible artworks. The exhibition is hosted by Tamsui District Office and Chen Cheng-Po Cultural Foundation, and is on display at the art gallery in front of the Presbyterian Church Chapel. Through a Beacon mobile guiding system, the visitor is able to view a detailed analysis of the painting while appreciating the works, and listen to the audio tour in Chinese, English, and Japanese.

「Discovering Taiwan─Re-visiting the Age of Natural History and Naturalists of Taiwan」

“Discovering Taiwan” has two units. Unit One focuses on the research tradition of the naturalists in the beginning of the 20th century. During on-site field studies, the museum’s researchers recorded their research findings and brought back specimens and new knowledge that contributed to the museum’s collections. Unit Two introduces how specimens became cherished evidence of natural history research through organization, identification, and classification. They are an important source for scientific research. Specimens represent different species. Different specimens form a miniature version of our big nature, illustrating the evolutionary history of different species in nature. “Taiwan’s New Scopes” introduces the important naturalists and their findings in the 100- year history of the National Taiwan Museum. These naturalists worked hard to unveil the secrets of Taiwan’s nature. Thanks to them, we can appreciate the beauty of Formosa through different lenses. “The Past is the Future” means that the museum does not only bring visitors to the past, but they also lead us to reflect on the current and envision the future. People often think that museum collections are evidence of history being frozen in time. The appearance of the collections may stay constant. But people’s opinions about the collections change constantly. Therefore, they may have different meanings and values in different times. In the museum, the past is the future. This is why people never lose their interest in museums.

Daily+― The Second Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Art

Baptised as Daily+, the 2nd Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Art unites 35 artists from France, USA, Austria, Luxembourg, Japan and Taiwan. Engaged firstly in the biennial, the Taiwanese novelist Yi-Chin LO writes along the exhibition venues, Nine Single Rooms Art Space and Northern Campus, and transforms the spaces full of winding alleys as interwoven reminiscences into Wall Climber, which mixes residual images of daily life with segmented work on what had happened here. The novel is the first invited work that lifts the curtain of the biennial. Taking the novel and exhibition spaces as reference of inspiration, the invited artists develop as a card game their projects in multiple direction, and the developing projects later become as well a reference to each other, through which the invisible relationship of linkage is thus gradually drawn out. Therefore, the novel based on the exhibition sites and the artworks referring to the novel ― both create intertextually between artwork, text and site a sort of multi-level dialogue from which is generated a significance network of inter-reference, similar to a parchment-like invisible text, full of layers of overlapping and accumulated traces. Derived from the daily life, the Daily+ is neither translation nor representation of the daily; it is not a clean break from the daily routine either. Rather, it signifies that in the different slices of reality stands a subject of art creation who, by means of various art practices, deconstructs and reconstructs the daily in order to return to it anew. Out of the very returning can a subject reveal the originality of the daily. In other words, keeping a distance from the daily life, a subject is thus able to discover in the relationship of dependency some points of reference, of substantiality and of transcendence, and to further transform the daily into infinitive resources for creation. As a folding mark cut slightly on the inner of the daily, the daily+ diverges the dimension of the daily to the unknown, to a place seemingly close yet out of reach, and endows the daily with a future never expected. Thus, we hope to unfold a multi-dialogue between art and daily life, and at the meantime, through a series of forums and workshops, to reveal progressively the "daily of artist", and finally to invite spectators to stroll in a wrinkled space of imagination and thought so as to observe each layer of daily life, diverted, metamorphosed, or transformed. The more the daily becomes the daily+, the more the daily+ becomes the daily.
